From Chronic Back Pain and Sciatica to a Healthy Back How two simple exercises changed my life

skellie

One year ago I started working my way towards a healthy body and, more specifically, fixing my back issues. I had a bulging disc at L5-S1 and had gone through physical therapy, seen back doctors, chiropractors and nothing seemed to help. Sitting in a chair 8+ hours a day is not something we’re intended to do. (more…)

The Biggest Threat to WordPress Isn’t Another CMS

photo-1453060113865-968cea1ad53a

If you ask anyone what the #1 threat to WordPress is, many will say “Ghost,” “Drupal,” “technical debt”, “poor user experience,” “lack of security,” or “lack of direction” for why it will eventually lose its position as the most popular CMS in the world. (more…)

This post serves as an outline for the January 21st, 2016 North Dallas WordPress Meetup group’s discussion on plugins you need to consider in 2016. Obviously, the plugins you need greatly depends on the type of site you run, but many of these plugins are appropriate for almost any type of site, and as such, should be considered by nearly all WordPress site owners. Work Ethic is the principle that hard work is intrinsically virtuous or worthy of reward. I love this video from Nike and Kevin Hart. It embraces everything I’ve learned about training a healthy mind, body, and spirit over the past few months.

My Thoughts on Calypso

calypso

So I’ve seen quite a number of reviews on the new Calypso application from the WordPress.com/Automattic team floating around twitter and the Post Status Club Slack channel (if you’re not a member, you should be, it is 1,000% worth it). Many of the opinions centered on the fact that Calypso is a vote of no-confidence in the current WP admin architecture. While I agree with that, I also write this very post from that admin, which is used by millions of sites around the world. I’ve been waiting to hear some reactions from inside and outside the WordPress community before I offer my own thoughts on the matter.

One of my favorite characters on The Walking Dead is Eastman. When Morgan stumbles upon his cabin, suffering from PTSD and trying to kill anything he comes across, he attacks Eastman and tries to take his goat. Eastman knocks Morgan out and places him in a small jail cell inside his cabin. He then teaches him “aikido,” a Japanese martial art that aims to redirect an attacker using their own momentum. How to Get a Job in Tech without knowing anything technical

c9e42240

Changing jobs is hard. Changing careers is even harder. I’ve had a few people ask me recently what I look for at Lift when interviewing potential new hires.  It’s a hard question to answer, because every role is different, but there are common characteristics I look for, no matter if we’re hiring someone who has been in tech for years or not at all.

The Walking Dead Story Sync

My team at Lift was very privileged to be able to work on this project for AMC Networks® back in 2012. Second screen experiences are now the de facto standard for television shows across the board. I’m proud to say that we were able to influence this space heavily and also work with shows we were actually invested in.

I had the privilege of chatting with Carrie, Suzette, Nick, Chris, Jason, and Steve about commercial WordPress themes, which is one of the things I’ve been writing about on my blog lately. Watch the episode below and make sure to subscribe to WP Watercooler here. (more…)
